The funeral director stepped forward carefully.

“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

Mrs. Ostrander entered through the side door before anyone could answer.

She was wearing the same navy coat she’d worn in the cemetery office. In one hand she carried a worn leather folder. In the other was the original cemetery ledger.

“I believe,” she said calmly, “this concerns interment rights.”

You could almost hear Bonnie stop breathing.

Mrs. Ostrander walked directly to the front table and opened the ledger.

“Ronald Marsh purchased plots 12-A and 12-B on April 14, 1998.”

She turned the book so everyone nearest could see.

“12-A: Ellen Marsh.”

Her finger slid one line lower.

“12-B: Reserved for Ronald Marsh.”

Then she tapped the final column.

“Right holder: Tracy Ellen Marsh.”

Bonnie laughed.

It sounded forced.

“That’s ridiculous. I’m his wife.”

Mrs. Ostrander nodded politely.

“I’m aware.”

“I make funeral decisions.”

“You may arrange the funeral. You do not own cemetery property.”

Bonnie’s attorney—whom I hadn’t even noticed sitting in the back—stood.

“This is an unnecessary disruption. As surviving spouse—”

Mrs. Ostrander interrupted him with surprising confidence.

“Counselor, are you familiar with perpetual interment deeds?”

He stopped speaking.

“The burial location belongs to the deed holder. State law is very clear.”

She closed the ledger with a soft thud.

“The grave will not be opened without Miss Marsh’s authorization.”

Every eye shifted back to me.

I hadn’t wanted power.

I had wanted my father.

Those weren’t the same thing.

The funeral director cleared his throat.

“There is… one additional matter.”

Bonnie looked confused.

“What additional matter?”

He hesitated before answering.

“When Mr. Marsh completed his pre-need funeral instructions six weeks ago, he left a sealed envelope with very specific directions.”

Bonnie spun toward him.

“What envelope?”

He looked almost embarrassed.

“It was to be opened only if there was a dispute regarding his burial.”

My heart started pounding.

The director reached into a locked drawer beneath the memorial table and removed a cream-colored envelope.

Across the front, in my father’s handwriting, were seven words.

If Bonnie objects, open this immediately.

Gasps rippled through the chapel.

Bonnie lunged forward.

“That is private.”

The director stepped back.

“It is addressed to the funeral director and the cemetery.”

He broke the seal.

Inside were three papers.

The first was a notarized burial instruction.

The second was a copy of the cemetery deed.

The third was a handwritten letter.

He unfolded it.

“Would you like me to read it?”

My throat tightened.

“Please.”

His voice became the only sound in the room.

“If you’re hearing this, then my girls are being separated again.

Ellen was my first home.

Bonnie was my second chance.

But Tracy has always been my daughter.

I failed her more times than I can count because I confused keeping peace with doing what was right.

Do not bury me away from Ellen.

And do not ask Tracy to surrender something I gave her to protect both of us.

She’ll think she is causing trouble.

Tell her she isn’t.

She’s keeping a promise I asked her to keep.”

The director stopped.

People were crying.

Including me.

I hadn’t cried when he died.

I cried hearing him apologize.

From the third row, a chair scraped.

My stepbrother, Adam, stood.

Adam was twenty-nine.

Bonnie’s son.

We’d never been close, but we’d never hated each other either.
